Taken about 45 minutes before my last submission. [link]
I was walking over a footbridge near The Art Gallery of Western Australia when I first saw this guy. He was leaning on the barrier with his eyes closed and was dragging on a cigarette, one hand on his forehead.
He didn't look too emotionally well, seemed very secluded with himself.
I was in an observant mood, so I leant on the wall aswell, a bit further up from him.
I didn't know whether to approach him until he began to cross the bridge the same way I was. When he got closer I made my move to ask for a photo. I introduced myself, and he did the same with the name Trevor.
"Well, I guess you can. I knew a girl once, along time ago, she took a photo of me. I use to be alot better looking and much more a better person once upon a time."
I told him he still had looks, otherwise I wouldn't be asking for a photograph.
He shrugged a tiny bit and I asked what he was up to in the city.
"Well I've been having a hard time lately, with myself, I'm just trying to get some fresh air and clear my head."
"I had a brain operation you see, and I've been fucked in the head since then."
I asked him if he had a tumour or something similar.
"No, they just decided to do an experimental operation on me one time,a while ago, don't know why, they just chose me, and it fucked me up."
We stood for a moment, and I didn't know what to say back, so I shook his hand and hoped that the times get better for him.
I walked away unsure what it was all about. And I still am. But I think there may be some truth in his words about the operation because there was an article in the paper over here a while back, that spoke about banned experimental brain operations.
All I know for sure, is that he was sad and talked to himself to try and figure things out. I wish I'd talked with him longer.
Labotomy. That's what I reckon it was. I read an entire article on that. It was about performing some sort of psychology in a way that would completely zombify all who were experimented on. The story was about a child, in I think the 1940s or 50s, who was a little out of control and had anger problems, so they performed a labotomy on him to 'cure' him. It screwed a lot of people up - a lot of these people still exist, and a lot have gotten over it. I think it was some procedure along the lines of using an ordinary bottle opener (or a screwdriver? don't remember) and hammering it into the forehead, right between the eyes that stops you from feeling. Sometimes, if it was bad, they would insert it into your tear ducts and drag the object back and forth along it, in your actual socket. Disgusting. Anyway, that's my guess. Interesting that you found one of these people. Lovely photo, as usual.
That is a very interesting story , as always. That sounds damn right illegal , just preforming brain surgery. Though they must have removed a very small certain part of his brain as removing even a little damages alot and from what you described he is functioning normaly , so something cognative/emotive must have been removed/damaged.
The picture is extremely moving as well. I can almost feel his dispair through the look in his eyes. Just .. wow

Sounds pretty intense, sounds pretty close to it though. My mum said something similar aswell. I wished I'd talked to him about some more, 'cause it's frustrating sometimes, not knowing the whole story.
