Artist's Comments

Taken on both the film and a camera I got from the rubbish dump.

Nikon, Nikkormat armed with 50mm lens.

Fuji Superia 400.

250th of a second at f/2 for both shots.

Taken yesterday, 28th of May 2008.

Only photoshop involved was a new canvas for the diptych, one quick curves adjustment for each photo to adjust the neg scan, and watermarks. No sharpening. And yes, his eyes are THAT blue.

This is Graham, aka this [link] guy.

I wouldn't usually post another picture of a person on the street who I've already photographed.

...But I just can't resist.

He's my favourite bum.

I've had three rolls of film developed this week, it's becoming a habit.

Anyway, I was half-flight on an escalator when I saw Graham walking around with his normal 500km an hour speed-walk, cigarette in hand, as always.

I thought what-the-heck, I need Graham on a piece of 35mm slide.

I caught up to Graham, almost needing a motorbike to do so, but I caught up with him eventually on foot.

"Graham."

He turned around and we had a little chat.

"How's life treatin' ya mate?"

I told him better than ever, but didn't want to ask the same question back.

I gave him a few bucks and lined up my uncropped-sensor 50mm on him.

"Want the fag in or out of my gob."

"Whatever you choose man." I replied.

No sexual insinuations intended in our conversation.

;).

We shook hands and wished each other a good day.

I finished the roll today, was winding it in and the release button down the bottom popped out randomly and tore a section of the negs from the inside as I was winding it.

In a spontaneous mental blank, I didn't think to push the button back in, but rather hope that the roll had wound in fully. So I released the back and opened it so much that I could have a peek.

The word fuck went through my head about three times.

Never mind, as Nirvana would say.

I took it to the place I get my film developed and she asked if I wanted neg scans this time, "Only if the photo's are good."

I got back an hour later and she had a grin on her face.

"Is your winder broken or something, 'cause it tore your negs so I scanned them individually for you."

I explained to her the reason.

"It's ok, it didn't ruin the slides themselves, just a few of the sprockets. You've got a photo of a guy on there who looks like he's been awake for along time. Crazzzzzyy eyes. One of them has solarisation from when you opened up the camera. It works well though."

I'm gonna get a bitch-size print of these photo's and frame them.

Film has qualities you can't simulate, I began photography in the digital-era with a digital camera so it's more of an exploration for me.

I'm in the same situation :D But school is teaching me how to work a 35mm, and it's hard when you've got a 1979 model and all these foreign features you don't know about :)
The girl was right - solarisation does have a good effect. Beautiful as always ^^

those photos are amazing man

I really like the way you cocked up the the first one :)

You really did that at F2? Sweet.

I may go get photos of the regulars in Lens on a sunny day for you. My camera's suffering from neglect. I prefer my Polaroid at the moment.

The photos are excellent. The story priceless :)

It's not the features in my case though, I know camera settings like the back of my hand, it's just the 'anticipating process' of waiting for the film to get developed etc. What '79 model do you speak of?

Yeah solarisation is interesting, I also like it though :). Thanks!

Thanks Lottie!

Film gives the best colours, I didn't realise how dry digital colours were until I shot a few rolls of colour film for the first time on a SLR.
:iconeyeseewell:
Yeah it was a pretty cool effect, no Photochop involved.

Yeah I shoot most of my film portraits on f/2 or 2.8, just love the depth of field.

Go and do it! Bring me back a street memento from France, I'll put them on my wardrobe.

Man, you're in another country, you should have your camera implanted into your eye socket, I know I definitely would.

But then again, you've always preferred your polaroid. Now you've got to savor those polaroid moments because the plant closed down.

Ah :D
It's a Canon AE-1. It's either 1979 or 1976...or 77. Around there. I can't remember.
